Since the good old battles of the bad old days the Poetry Society has
become almost exclusively a club for whatever the current mainstream
is but I do know of people who belong to it simply to get Poetry
Review at their discount and reading it gives a fairly comprehensive
picture of whatever that current mainstream is. For those who are in
that club by choice I don't think the thing is stale and boring -
after all, stale poetry loves a stale loaf. You still get though, on
the whole, a better standard of reviews/criticism of poetry in that
then you do in the broadsheets and there are always a few little
nuggets of surprise. But personally, no, I wouldn't dream of joining -
I just read other peoples' copies.
