CALL FOR PAPERS
EAST & WEST: CROSS-CULTURAL ENCOUNTERS
11-12 September 2009 (School of Art History, University of St Andrews)
In an ever expanding and globalised world this postgraduate conference
proposes to open a dialogue between the Far East, the Middle East and
the West, and to explore themes of cultural exchange between Asia and
the West in an inter-disciplinary forum. It aims to bring together
postgraduate students and young scholars working in various
disciplines. Researchers are invited to submit proposals for papers
representing original and ongoing research that addresses
cross-cultural exchanges and encounters in the Arts and Humanities.
These may include, but are not restricted to, the disciplines of art
history, museum and gallery studies, craft and design, photography,
literature, social anthropology and history.
Possible topics may include, but are not limited to:
Western/Asian responses to Asian/Western art (including painting,
sculpture, architecture, photography, design, literature, music etc.);
Picturing international trade and wars in the art of Asia and Europe/America;
Comparative studies of art institutions and policy in the East and West;
Anglo-Chinese-Japanese cultural exchanges; and
Internationalism, Globalisation and Colonialism in the arts.
ABSTRACT SUBMISSION
A 250 word abstract should be submitted electronically before 31 May 2009.
