ASIAC Samarkand Summer School
4th edition
August 17th – September 11th, 2009
Deadline for application: April 20th, 2009
The Italian Society for Central Asian and Caucasian Studies (ASIAC,
http://www.asiac.net) is pleased to announce the fourth edition of its
Summer School, to be held in Samarkand in cooperation with the local State
Institute for Foreign Languages (SamSIFL,
http://sifl.50megs.com/indexen.html), and the support of the University of
Turin (http://www.unito.it). The School’s syllabus includes intensive
courses in Uzbek, Tajik or Russian, as well as afternoon seminars and
excursions to places of historical, archaeological and/or anthropological
interest in Samarkand city and in the region. The Samarkand Summer School
can rely on solid links with local and international scholars and research
institutions.
Language courses and seminars will take place in the central building of the
Samarkand State Institute of Foreign Languages. The duration of the school
is four weeks.
Participation is limited to 15 MA or PhD students, selected on the basis of
their CV and motivation (see Application procedure).
Syllabus
The 2009 edition comprises:
1. Language training in Uzbek, Russian, Tajik (literary and/or sheva-i

staff from the Samarkand State Institute of Foreign Languages and the
Samarkand State University. Each language course has the duration of 80
hours and includes grammar lessons, exercises and conversation.
2. Our seminar programme aims at offering a wide-range insight of ongoing
research projects, both by confirmed and younger scholars, including some
Uzbek colleagues. Invited speakers are asked to share their own research
experience (fieldwork, methods, sources) with the participants, as well as
to present their results as case-studies. All the seminars will be held in
English, or a translation into English will be provided. Topics covered by
the seminar series will include:
- archival research in Uzbekistan and historical methods
- topics in the history of Tsarist and Soviet Central Asia
- rural and development studies
- long-term landscape history of the Zeravshan region
- borders and minorities issues in contemporary Central Asia
- diasporas and emigration from Central Asia
More topics will be added or adapted according to the specific interests of
this year’s participants.
Participants to the Summer School will have the opportunity, if they wish,
to present and discuss their own ongoing researches or projects during
additional seminar sessions.
