SPOTLIGHT: VETERAN MOVE
President Obama abandons a proposal that would have required military
veterans to use private health insurance to cover treatment of
service-related injuries, according to the White House. Under the
proposal, which Obama had included in his fiscal year 2010 budget plan,
the Department of Veterans Affairs would have billed health insurers for
treatment of service-related injuries and medical conditions. Currently,
VA covers those costs and bills health insurers only for treatment of
nonservice-related injuries and medical conditions. The Obama
administration has said that the proposal would have saved about $530
million annually. White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs says that
Obama decided to abandon the proposal after veterans groups raised
concerns about the potential effect on "veterans' and their families'
ability to access health care." (story) <>
