Another great way for postgrad students to get involved in outreach activities is for them to join a British Science Association branch - they can be as involved as they want and can follow their interests. They also don’t need to be sci-com professionals but they do need to be enthusiastic and keen to promote science and engineering...

Dear Catherine,
outreach activities count towards the Transferable Skills Training which all graduate students should be getting. This is fully supported by my department. In fact we have an Open Day soon, and all post-grads have been positively encouraged to engage and participate. We also encourage participation in activities with schools such as those run by the Millennium Maths Project.
Best wishes,
