Hello,

We have worked on a number of projects in Eire where indicating the first
and last nosing is a common practice.

However, although we are not aware of any statistics, our experience in Eire
has identified that inconsistencies in practice leads to confusion and
accidents, and probably more so than in the UK.

The general convention in the UK is to treat all nosings the same. It’s a
simple concept and it has worked well.

Do we really need to add another element to confuse installers, weaken the
current provision and undermine the confidence of those who need consistency
and continuity to navigate with confidence and safety?

We believe to encourage other options than the basic guidance offered in ADM
and BSI would diminish a generally well understood and accepted practice.

We are not Luddites, but if it's not broken why mend it.

In the past I have recommended that the landings and stairs themselves
differ tonally. This provides a large area contrast to identify different
levels. I'm not sure where I saw this recommended but seems to work in
principal.

Hi Keith
I am not aware of any guidance which says that the top and bottom nosings
should be treated any differently to the others in a flight. If you think
about it though, it is superfluous since you already know where the first
and last steps are because you can see the highlighted nosings and therefore
are already aware of the extent of the flight. I think that this is an
unnecessary practice which is applied inconsistently and therefore should
not be used.

Subject: TOP AND BOTTOM STAIR NOSINGS

Gradus ltd is the leading UK manufacturer of stair nosings.
We have received several enquiries asking as to whether the top and bottom
stair nosings should be a different colour to the rest.
We are aware that this practice is found mainly in transport environmements
but cannot establish whether this practice is based on any published
research
or guidance. Experts think that this is not good practice and could lead to
confusion.
I would welcome any comments or whereabouts of any research that back up
this practice.

Thank you
