Is anyone aware of any urban extensions or new settlements in England or
Wales which were completed during the 1990s or nearing completion at the
time of the 2001 Census, apart from the ones below?
Adults with Car Car Commuting
Bradley Stoke (Bristol) 95.6% 81.1%
Barton Hills (Luton) 97.8% 82.9%
Great Notley (Braintree) 97.9% 77.7%
Newnham (Plymouth) 97.9% 82.8%
Of those which were at an earlier stage in 2001, studies have also been
published into Poundbury (Dorset) and Cambourne (Cambridgeshire) which
show a similar pattern of car dependency. An unpublished MSc dissertation on
Caterham Barracks Village (Surrey) shows a high level of commuting by train
into Central London, but all other journeys just as car dependent.
There are, of course, plenty of examples from elsewhere in Europe which
demonstrate that 'it ain't necessarily so'.
Do you know of any other examples in England I am missing?
