Dear Donald,
the bug you describe is present in release 1111 but has been fixed for
release 1782 so you should always use the latest or, at least, patch
r1111 with the file spm_getSPM.m available from here:

Also, be careful if you use some external toolboxes that might contain
their own copy of spm_getSPM.m, override it and expose the bug again,
see e.g.
