NiFTI is really useful because it contains orientation information. But it's only
for SPM5 and later, IIRC.
*.img|hdr (the SPM version of the Analyze image format) is useful insofar as
it's used for SPM2 and earlier, though it doesn't directly encode orientation
information.
Also I think there's a "2-file" version of NiFTI with suffixes img and hdr, but I
could be wrong about that.
Converting files...you'd need to be more specific. I don't remember how to
convert in SPM using the graphical user interface, but I'm sure it's easy to do
so using the SPM functions (m-files). AFNI and other such software also have
conversion routines. You can locate some of this using google.
