I hope children's lit and fantasy is not considered too low brow, but I think C.S. Lewis confessed in "Surprised by Joy" that he loved reading Spenser. I think that sometimes the iconography in the Narnia Cronicles tastes of Spenser (for example when lewis describes the Lady with the green robe in 'Silver Chair')even though it is in prose. If I remember correctly he calls her robe 'kirtle'. This use of slightly outdated vocab would be another link with Spenser. These are of course vague recollections. Perhaps a closer scrutiny might reveal more definite Spenser- gleanings in allegory or in the names.
Best wishes to all
