All,
Maybe it is a bad time to mention this but there is a records continuum model out there for managing our records. Those who advocate it say that it presents a much more holistic, integrated approach to records management. Indeed, because of the non-tangible, recursive nature of electronic records they would argue that the records life-cycle is an outdated way of managing what we create...sorry it is the topic of an essay on my RM Masters course and has been occupying my thoughts much recently.

Subject: Re: Information Life Cycle
Whether you accept Steve's view or not, you should approach Information Lifecycle Management with some care. Software and system vendors have borrowed the lifecycle concept from RM to describe the process by which 'information' (data would perhaps be a better word) moves through a storage hierarchy depending, primarily, on the frequency with which it's used - online when in constant use, near-line when used occasionally, off-line when
not used at all. The final destruction/disposal phase still needs to be
based, as in the records lifecycle, on assessed business need rather than on frequency of use. Some very important records are unlikely to be looked at very often and some very unimportant ones may be accessed frequently over a short space of time and then never again. The same thing applies to the 'information' encompassed by ILM.
