Hi Mike,

I'd like to come if there is still space - I found the experience really
helpful last year, especialy eating ice cream when you all went walking,
and haven't been to Loch Lomond for years.

best wishes

Dear all

Hi this is the SECOND call for expressions of
interest in the ""pygywg"/Participatory Geographies retreat 2009".

The event
For those who don't know - the retreat is an
'annual event' (I think this will only be the
third) at which like minded folk with an interest
in all things "participatory geographies" - get together.
It's like a conference only better: we try and
bin all the bad bits (endless quick-fire
back-to-back 20 minute paper sessions, careerist
networking, hierarchies of credibility etc etc)
and try and keep in all the great bits (people
talking to each other about the things that
really excite them - in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere).
We also do things you're unlikely to find at your
average academic conference - such as ice breaker
games - drama workshops, sing alongs, cook-ups and rambling.
The key thing is that its low key, supportive,
reinvigorating and - of course participatory!

Format
The format is flexible - and we welcome
suggestions - 'papers' are not usually part of
the format - but hey - if it helps you get
funding from your department - we can work with
that. In the past we have had reading groups and
have experimented with some techniques - but
every meet is different and driven by
participants. The main thing is that we get to
talk at length and in depth about our work and
ideas and get to share thoughts and enthusiasm!

The location
Loch Lomond Youth Hostel Scotland (a castle on
the banks of a Loch!) check out the link:
http://www.syha.org.uk/SYHA/web/site/Hostels/LochLomond.asp?selectPic=lochlomondlarge1
Shared rooms - Self catering - but also a cafe,
and restaurant on site. It looks like a fantastic site for the weekend.

The dates:
Start - Friday 29
End - Sunday 31st May or Monday 1 June (my
original email had said the Sunday - but I now
have a suggestion from Rachel Pain - of Monday
1st so that we can use all of Sunday for 'work' -
and those needing to travel to England (or
further) can do so on Monday rather than the Sunday)

The cost:
Final costs to be determined - room cost will be
about £18 a night - plus a charge for food).
NEWS: costs quoted in my first call have been
reduced - a subsidized mini bus from Glasgow now
available and we look like we will have some
funds to help pay for room hire - so total costs
should be well under the initial estimate of £100 a head.

Assistance with costs:
We can offer some assistance to those who face financial difficulties:
The person to contact for information about this is:
Friederike Ziegler [ mailto:[log in to unmask]]
Bursaries will be distributed on the basis of
relevance and need. Applicants should provide a
page-long summary of their research interests and
what they feel they will gain from the weekend.
Applications will be selected which most closely
reflect the goals and orientation of the Working
Group. Ranking will be guided by the following order of need:
i) Postgraduate or unwaged
ii) Holds junior academic temporary post with no source of funding
iii) Holds junior permanent post with no source of funding
iv) Holds senior academic post with no source of funding

Get your name on the "guest list"
Places are limited - currently just 16 - (13
already definitely taken see below) although if
more people commit to coming - EARLY enough - I
can book further places at the hostel which can
accommodate quite a few of us (though is popular
so don't delay in expressing an interest).
Below is the
list of names of those who have
currently shown and interestFormat - again
Its never too late to start making suggestions
about this years format - so if anyone has any cracking ideas - lets
hear them.

OK talk to you all again soon

Yours

Mike
