PhD studentship in infectious disease modelling at the Health Protection Agency Centre for Infections, UK
Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in the mathematical modelling of infectious diseases, tenable from February 2009 and funded by the European Union. The project will involve the application and development of innovative modelling and statistical techniques to study the transmission of major and emerging hospital pathogens and evaluating
options for their control. Candidates must be UK/EU citizens.
The successful candidate will work within a major European research network for combating the spread of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in hospitals which brings together internationally recognized experts in basic laboratory sciences, hospital epidemiology, clinical medicine, behavioural sciences, quantitative analysis and modelling, and health
economics.
The studentship will be based in the Statistics, Modelling and Bioinformatics Department, Centre for Infections in the Health Protection Agency (HPA) in North London and jointly supervised by the School of Mathematical Sciences, University of Nottingham.
Applicants should possess a bachelors degree (2i or above) in mathematics, statistics, science or other discipline with a strong analytical component, and ideally have some exposure to mathematical biology or mathematical modelling of infectious diseases. Experience of computer programming is highly desirable. The studentship will cover EU
tuition fees, together with a stipend of £15,100-16,000 for three years.
The Centre for Infections at Colindale, NW London is an internationally renowned centre of excellence for expertise, reference and research, surveillance and epidemiology in relation to micro-organisms that affect
human health. The modern purpose built centre is well equipped and staffed and provides excellent Library, Occupational Health and Refectory facilities. There is also a Nursery on Site.
