Dear Colleagues,
The Columbia Astrophysics Laboratory invites applications for a
Post-Doctoral Research Scientist in Solar Physics.
Information about the position and how to apply can be found at
academicjobs.columbia.edu/applicants/Central?quickFind=51257. All
applications must be submitted electronically.
The successful candidate will join a collaboration between the group
headed by Dr. Daniel Wolf Savin at Columbia and colleagues at the Naval
Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. Using our newly developed
analysis methods, the successful candidate will analyze archival solar
spectroscopic data to derive upper solar atmosphere elemental abundances
and use the results to constrain the predictions of current theoretical
models. Additionally, s/he will investigate how uncertainties in the
underlying atomic data limit the accuracy of the derived abundances and
develop a prioritized list of elements and atomic processes for which
new theoretical and experimental atomic physics data are needed. The
position is initially for one year with the possibility of up to an
additional two years contingent upon the availability of funds and
mutual satisfaction. Candidates are expected to have a PhD in Solar
Physics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Physics, Applied Physics, or a related
discipline.
Experience in solar physics, spectroscopic analysis, data reduction from
current or past solar spectrometers, and atomic physics is a must.
Computer skills required include programming, multi-dimensional data
analysis, IDL, Linux OS, and Windows OS. The applicant should have a
strong background related to at least some of these areas listed above.
Demonstrated written and oral communication skills are also required.
A proven research ability, evidence of future research potential, and
the ability to work both independently and cooperatively with others is
highly desired.
Applicants should submit a letter of interest, curriculum vitae
(including list of publications), and a statement of research
activities/laboratory experience. They should also provide the names of
three references, including email addresses of people to be contacted
for a reference letter. Reference letters should also be uploaded in
the online system.
Thank you for your consideration,
Daniel Wolf Savin
