Dear all,
Could you please circulate the scholarship advertisement below in your
department and pass it to 4th year students.
Regards,

University of the Year Scholarships
The CMP group at the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of
Leicester is offering a project suitable for scholarship application as
recently announced by the University of Leicester. The University of
Leicester has established an open scholarship programme to celebrate
its Times Higher Education 'University of the Year' award. The
prestigious scholarships last for three years and are worth approximately GBP
53,000. The deadline for applications is March
13th 2009. More details, including the application pack are available at
http://www.le.ac.uk/whatnext/index.html
In this experimental project the dynamics of both uni-molecular and
bi-molecular reactions will be investigated using an entirely new
approach for the detection of the reaction product. The reactions will
be initiated by photo-excitation using a fs pulse from a laser operating
in the VIS and UV spectral ranges and the progression of the reaction
will be probed by inner shell excitation using a synchronised fs pulse
from a soft-X-ray free electron laser and photo-electron
spectroscopy. The delay between the two pulses will be continuously
increased allowing the recording of a map of the reaction coordinate
with detailed information of the chemical environment while progressing
through the transition state. Complexes of reactants will be formed
using helium droplet beams and the pick-up method.
The project will be carried out in collaboration with the group of Dr
Tim Laarmann at DESY in Hamburg and the candidate will have the
opportunity to join a truly international team working at a major
instrumental facility (FLASH). The project is at the cutting edge of
chemical physics and involves a strong experimental element.
This scholarship scheme is highly competitive and interested candidates
should have a first class degree or demonstrate equivalent
excellence. Experience in X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS) or fs-laser
photo-chemistry or helium droplet beam machines is desireable but not mandatory.
Interested candidates should visit the following website:

or contact Dr Klaus von Haeften (kvh6 [at]le.ac.uk).
