Dear Sarah,
You might want to approach Birmingham Arthritis Resource Centre (BARC) as they have translated so much info into the same languages as you mention for arthritis sufferers. They might put you in contact with someone, the person you want to speak to is Chan Gordhan. If you decide to contact her let me know so that I can speak to her, we work in collaboration on several projects.
Regards
Kanta

Subject: Cancer Charity seeks help with translations into South Asian languages
Dear Friends,
Our Charity, Cancer Equality, is producing the first booklet to help South Asian cancer patients cope with eating difficulties associated with Cancer and its treatment. This is the first series of dietary information for Black & Minority Ethnic cancer patients, and we have already published booklets for African Caribbean and Chinese communities.
However, we would like to produce the South Asian booklet in several languages, but due to limited funds we are unable to fund translations and printing for more than two languages.
We are looking for anyone who would be able to help us with translating the booklet into any of the following languages:
Urdu, Punjabi, Bangla, Hindi, Gujarati and Tamil
We do not feel that not being a professional 'translator' would be a problem, and if fact can lead to more 'appropriate' language use for the target audience opposed to the very formal translations produced by some agencies. Knowledge of traditional foods would be useful.
Booklet details:
- English text attached
- The non-translated booklet is 30 A5 pages, plus the cover.
- The booklets have been reviewed and approved by specialist groups of the British Dietetic Association and the versions for A/C and Chinese patients are being used in hospitals around the country. For more information, click here <http://www.cancerequality.org.uk/index.cfm?unique=606F59F1-5056-AE10-CC7B3367881780B0&id=606F43AA-5056-AE10-CC82E15F563C7DF3&id2=606F43AA-5056-AE10-CC82E15F563C7DF3&Area=news&Action=contentdetail&ContentID=5>
Please let me know if you would be able to help. I imagine the main issues would be around finding the time to do the work, and having the correct software to produce the translated font, but if you can, it would be a great help to the project because otherwise, we may have to consider dropping some languages.
We would acknowledge your help and include your name/organisation in the booklet. Also, if you can direct us to any possible funders/sponsors for the printing, we would also be very grateful.
If you are interested, or would like further information, please contact me at [log in to unmask] or call 0791 565 2397.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards,
Sarah
