Dear Tony - Edward Herbert Bayldon had interests in South African gold mines
before turning his attention to Dartmoor tin mines in the late 1890s. From
1896-1900, when he lived at Oaklands, Dawlish, he was granted licences for
Hensroost Tin Mine which he worked for several years under the managership
of Capt. A. J. Grose. He was seemingly in some form of partnership with Mr
Frederick Pine Theophilus Struben who bought the Spitchwick estate on
Dartmoor at about this time.
In about 1903-4 he decided to close Hensroost/Hexworthy tin mine on moorland
Dartmoor and turned his attention to Owlacombe Mine near Ashburton in which
he is said to have 'lost' £75,000 although the mine was largely a 'hobby' to
him.
He is also said to have opened an iron mine at Brixham at the end of the
19th century. He acquired parts of the Ingsdon estate, Ilsington, and was a
Deputy Lieutenant of Devon and a Justice of the Peace.
He is said to have committed suicide by shooting himself sometime before the
First World War.
Much of the information I have about him was given to me in the 1970s by
William A. Grose (1886-1994),son of A.J. Grose, who recalled Mr & Mrs
Bayldon visiting Hexworthy Mine in the early 1900s, and who described Mr
Bayldon as 'a very conservative gentleman'.
I would be most interested to know more about him.
Yours, Tom.
