Saturday 21st February saw North Yorkshire’s past brought into the
digital age with the launch of the North Yorkshire County Council
Historic Environment Record onto the internet.
The Historic Environment Record (HER), owned and maintained by North
Yorkshire County Council, is a database of information about
archaeology, historic buildings and landscapes. It is primarily used by
the Council and others to help manage and protect these fragile
remains.
However, the information in the system is also often of use to
researchers and of interest to the public. To make the information more
easily accessible, North Yorkshire County Council have been working in
partnership with English Heritage and software company Exegesis SDM Ltd
to make the HER information available via the Heritage Gateway.
The Heritage Gateway is a website hosted by English Heritage that
allows people to search a number of different datasets - some national
and some more local - to find out about the historic environment of
their area.

Now people interested in North Yorkshire can see information from the
HER through the gateway, and use it for their own research or just to
satisfy their curiosity about what remains of the past are around them.
Cllr John Fort said ”This is an exciting new venture which brings
information about North Yorkshire’s past into the 21st century, making
it accessible to the widest audience possible.”
The launch of North Yorkshire County Council’s online HER took place
as part of the events at the 3rd North Yorkshire Historic Environment
Day, a sold-out event held at Hambleton forum in February.
Now firmly established as an annual event, this showcased the important
and highly varied historic environment of England’s largest county.
Over 300 people attended and enjoyed eight talks covering the rich
variety of research projects and fieldwork activity in the County over
the past year.
Talks covered Roman Malton and Norton, the monastic landscape of
Fountains Abbey, and current excavations at Star Carr in the Vale of
Pickering, amongst other things.
Visitors were also able to browse archaeological book stalls and visit
displays by 15 local societies and Community Archaeology Projects.
Issue 2 of North Yorkshire Historic Environment News, a newsletter about
the work of the Historic Environment Team and partners, was also given
out free to attendees. You can now download your free copy of the
newsletter from: www.northyorks.gov.uk/communityheritage
