Institute of Engineering Surveying & Space Geodesy (IESSG)

Fully-Funded PhD Studentship

Enhanced Loran Data Channel Performance and Integrity

Enhanced Loran (eLoran) is needed to mitigate the well-known
vulnerabilities of GPS, so securing our critical infrastructure and
allowing users to retain their safety, security, and economic benefits
when GPS and other GNSS services are disrupted.

The purpose of this PhD study is firstly, to investigate the maximum
data bandwidth needed to carry differential-Loran (dLoran) correction
messages and timely system integrity information to maritime users
across Europe; secondly, to determine the integrity of position
solutions derived from dLoran corrections broadcast by Eurofix, an
internationally standardised Loran Data Channel implemented on
European Loran stations. The work will require the analysis of the
probability of Eurofix delivering Hazardously Misleading Information
(HMI) to the user.

Students should have a good first degree (2.1 or equivalent) in a
relevant discipline eg engineering, mathematics, computer science,
physics.

The project is supported by an enhanced EPSRC Industrial CASE
scholarship awarded by the Location and Timing Knowledge Transfer
Network. The General Lighthouse Authority (GLA) is the industry
partner and they will be closely engaged in the supervision of the
project and will host the student during visits to the GLA offices.

The studentship will cover home/EU fees and provide a generous
maintenance payment (rising from £16,000 per year, tax free) over the
three-year period of a full-time PhD. Due to funding restrictions, the
studentship is only open to UK and EU students who have lived in the
UK for the past three years.

Short-listed students will need to complete the formal application
process (please see:
http://pgstudy.nottingham.ac.uk/Apply/Pages/Application.aspx).

Further information is available at:
http://jobs.nottingham.ac.uk/ENG269X1. Informal enquiries may be
addressed to Professor T Moore, tel: 0115 951 3933, fax: 0115 951

Applications (preferably by Email), with a detailed CV, the names and
addresses of two referees, and reasons why you think you are
suitable for the scholarship, should be sent to Professor T Moore.
