Vacancy for Field Geoscientist
========================
The School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at Newcastle University has
a vacancy for a field geoscientist to prepare and deploy GPS equipment in
Antarctica.
Based within the School of Civil Engineering & Geosciences, you will join
the Newcastle Geodesy team and carry out research related to the measurement
of glacial isostatic adjustment in Antarctica. The post will mainly focus on
the selection and deployment of continuous GPS equipment in the southern
Antarctic Peninsula. You will be required to travel to Antarctica (using the
British Antarctic Survey logistics framework) for a period of up to
approximately 2 months over the 2009/10 Austral summer. The research project
that you will work on is funded by the UK Natural Environmental Research
Council (NERC) Antarctic Funding Initiative and aims to provide improved
models of glacial isostatic adjustment for West Antarctica using new surface
velocity data. The project is led by Dr Matt King (Newcastle University)
with collaborators from Durham University, British Antarctic Survey, Delft
University of Technology and University of Ottawa.
It is expected that you will have some time to pursue existing or new
interests with the Newcastle Geodesy team, and so, for example if you are a
recent PhD recipient in geodesy or a closely related scientific or
engineering discipline this post could give you the ideal opportunity to
write up results or initiate postdoctoral research ideas.
You will be qualified to at least Masters or Bachelors degree level in a
geoscience, engineering or closely related discipline. Ideally, you would
have experience in deploying continuous/autonomous geophysical equipment in
remote locations.
The post is available immediately for a fixed-term 12 month position, but
with the potential for continuation as a strategic member of the geodesy
research group, depending on expertise, funding and performance.
Informal enquiries about the post may be directed to Dr Matt King
[log in to unmask] or telephone +44 (0)191 222 7833.
