Dear All,
A forthcoming meeting that may be of interest to some on the list (you
might find some of the speakers familiar too):
Charles Darwin and the Great Pioneers of Geology
7 March 2009, 11.00am - 5.00pm, University of Leicester
Annual Saturday Seminar
The Geology Section (C) of the Leicester Literary and Philosophical
Society
Tickets £20.00 with a buffet lunch or £13.00 without lunch.
2009 sees the bicentenary of Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary
of the publication of his seminal work 'On the Origin of Species'.
Darwin was an excellent field geologist, producing manuscripts on the
geology of South America and coral reef formation. Geology was central
to his work on evolution as it provided the vast time needed for natural
selection to produce the biodiversity we see today. To celebrate this,
the theme of our annual Saturday Seminar is Charles Darwin and the great
pioneers of geology!
Speakers and their 'great pioneers' include Professor Paul Smith (on
Lapworth, with reference to Sedgwick and Murchison), Dr Cherry Lewis
(author of 'The Dating Game'; James Parkinson), Dr Chris Duffin
(Buckland), Tom Sharpe (De La Beche) and finally two on Darwin by
Professor Peter Worsley and Dr Lyall Anderson.
