That is fine. (I use SSH replicated password files that synch every 5
minutes or so on my cluster(s) instead of NIS, I find it more fault
tolerant).

Is the error output correct? ie: does the username 'lwang' exist on
both the machines with the same home directory (via NFS I am guessing)
and does the lwang user have the same UID on both machines?
