news cultures in contemporary Europe, from a rare, cross-national and multi-
level perspective. It maps key trends in newsmaking practices over the past
two decades, examining the five major sets or layers of influences on
journalism practices..
The book revisits and renews the multi-dimensional approach to understanding
the major influences on journalism and news making. Making the News is
framed around a multi-layered approach, exploring the individual, meso-level
and macro-level influences on journalism and news cultures. To this end, core
chapters are focused on five major, if overlapping, levels of analysis:
individual, institutional, organizational, political economic and broad cultural
influences.
Making the News moves beyond the tendency to focus on journalism and
newsmaking practices within a single country. It draws on original, cross-
national research to examine current journalism practices and related
newsmaking cultures in 11 West, Central and East European countries. The
background studies include in-depth interviews with almost 100 senior
journalists and subsequent workshop discussions with relevant interest groups.
One chapter also addresses the extent to which journalism news cultures in
contemporary Europe remain embedded within a ‘national prism’.
This book also addresses the growing role of online journalism, the internet
and other digital media developments. Whilst interrogating naive techno-
centric perspectives, Making the News examines the interplay of professional,
technical, organizational and other factors in shaping innovations in
newsmaking practices across ‘new’ and ‘old’ news media sectors.
With its evidence from a wide range of European settings and multi-level
perspective, Making the News is an ideal text for students and professionals
