It is nearly 20 years since the Berlin wall collapsed and countries in
Central and Eastern Europe launched the transition process from the
central planned system to market economy. A two-day conference is
organised to evaluate the changes and policy challenges that Transition
Economies have experienced in their banking sector and financial markets.
‘20 Years of Transition in Central and Eastern Europe: Money, Banking
and Financial Markets'
17th-18th September 2009
Invited key note speakers include:
Professor Erik Berglöf (Chief Economist, European Bank for
Reconstruction and Development, London, United Kingdom)
Professor John Bonin (President, Association for Comparative Economic
Studies, Wesleyan University, a former editor of Journal of Comparative
Economics 1996-2006, USA),
Mr Krishnan Ramadurai (Managing Director, FitchRatings, London, United
Kingdom)
Research papers focusing on transition economies in the following areas
of research are encouraged to be submitted:
Monetary Policy and Transmission Mechanism; Financial Development and
Economic Growth; Exchange Rates and International Capital Flows;
Institutional Developments: Governance; Restructuring and Privatisation
of Banking Systems in Transition Economies; Performance, Efficiency and
Competition in Banking Industry; The Integration Process of Banking and
Financial Markets into a Single European Market; The Role of Banking
Supervision and Regulation as Stabilising Anchor during the Transition
Period; Changes in and Regulation of Financial (Capital) Markets.
Conference publications:
Papers presented at the conference may be considered for publication in
a symposium in Economics of Transition (Editors: John Bonin and Isabel
Schnabel) or in a symposium/special issue of Review of International
Economics (Editors: Guglielmo Caporale and Roman Matousek).
