Hi Claudia
Sounds like a pathological request - what is the editor's interest in drugs and 'impaired parenting'? why the connection? why is
this a DS issue?
Perhaps you could take a critical psychological line on this, in terms of deconstructing the assumption and connection? Parker et
al's (1995) deconstructing psychopathology, might be a starting point. I, like you, would be wary of extending pathological ideas
about disabled families.
hope this helps

Hello, all,
I am currently under contract to write a chapter for a 2nd/3rd year
Canadian Sociology textbook on families that have parents with
disabilities. I've done, I think, a pretty good job of not pathologizing
such families, and of putting the social context of familial challenges
forward. I draw a genealogy between historical (and more recent) eugenic
practices and the current lack of family support for parents with
disabilities, for example.
The editor has liked my chapter, but at a couple of earlier points in
the process when dealing with the publisher's acquisitions editor, it
was requested that I include "more material on parents affected by
debilitating agents like drugs (prescription and non-prescription) and
alcohol abuse." I at one point decided to withdraw from the project, but
was then assured that I could write the chapter I wanted to write. That
being said, now that the chapter's gone out for review, the editor is
again asking for an inclusion of the issue of drugs, addiction and
parenting.
I'm willing to give this thing one more go - mainly because there is so
little material concerning parenting with a disability in mainstream
textbooks, and I think it's an important topic.
I have put a little material in about the recognition of addiction as a
disability in 2 of the 10 provinces on Canada, but have pretty much left
it at that. Can anyone send to me to sources that would not be
pathologizing, that might address issues concerning family and
dual-diagnosis (mental health and disability) or addiction (either as a
cause of disability or as a result of disability-related medication)?
Thanks in advance,
Claudia Malacrida
