Subject: [EPIC NEWS] EPIC Defends FB Users. EPIC Needs Your Support.
Dear EPIC Alert Subscriber,
This week Facebook, the popular social network service, announced that it would restore its original privacy policy, ending a growing protest that had galvanized bloggers and Facebook users all around the world.
One popular consumer site first drew attention to the change that transferred control over the user content -- the photos and comments that everyone now posts -- from the user to Facebook. Several Facebook Groups were formed. The Facebook Group "People Against the New Terms of Service (TOS)" gathered over 100,000 users in support.
It was EPIC, though, that prepared the complaint for the Federal Trade Commission that led Facebook to back down. Building on EPIC's expertise with similar cases in the past and working closely with the people organizing the campaign and consumer experts, we developed the legal arguments and the factual record that we knew would have an impact in Washington.
Facebook knew it, too. It was EPIC that filed the complaint against Choicepoint that led to the biggest privacy judgment in the FTC's history. It was EPIC that got Microsoft to revise Passport, after an FTC investigation. And it was EPIC that almost got the Trade Commission to impose privacy safeguards for the Google-Doubleclick merger.
We are glad that Facebook has gone back to its original policy and also that it is committed to a more open process going forward. This does not end the debate over privacy by any means, but it is a step in the right direction.
It is also a reason that you, as an EPIC Alert subscriber or a Facebook user, should take a couple of minutes and make a contribution to EPIC. Your support makes it possible for us to pursue these cases and to defend your rights.
