We would like to give people a brief update about how The Equality
Trust is at last coming into being, and about some of the publicity
Penguin have arranged for the book we have written setting out the
new evidence of the damaging social consequences of large income
differences in societies. (The book is called "The Spirit Level: why
more equal societies almost always do better" and it will be
published by Penguin on 5th of March).
1. With a generous grant from the Joseph Rowntree Charitable
Trust, The Equality Trust has now been able to take on its first full
time worker - Kathryn Busby. As well as being an experienced
campaigner, she has a proven record in fundraising and running a web
site. She will be a great asset to the Trust and we feel very lucky
to have her.
2. Bill Kerry will continue as Company Secretary to file company
reports, do our accounts, and many other tasks to help with the
Trust's work.
3. The Equality Trust is sharing office space at 32-36 Loman
Street, London SE1 0EE. This is now the registered office as well as
the hub of its activities.
4. We are being given legal advice on applying for charitable
status.
5. Penguin has arranged a lot of very valuable publicity round
the publication of The Spirit Level: Why more equal societies almost
always do better. They have arranged inclusion in Radio 4's "Start
The Week" (with Andrew Marr) on Monday 2nd March; Radio 3's "Night
Waves" on Weds 4th; and a lunchtime public lecture in London at the
Royal Society of Arts on Thurs 5th March. (Unfortunately all places
seem to be booked now - the link is http://www.thersa.org/events
<http://www.thersa.org/events> .)
The Guardian will probably cover it on 5th March (in G2?) and
probably the Sunday Times.
6. We are writing a report on Equality and Sustainability
commissioned by the London Sustainable Development Commission.
7. The Equality Trust web site should be up and running by the
end of February at http:www.equalitytrust.org.uk It will set out the
evidence on the effects of large income inequalities. We are also
planning for it to include a downloadable filmed lecture.
