For Mac, I've been using Graphic Converter:

It costs €29.95, and you can use as a trial version for a while. The
longer you have it without paying for it, the longer it takes for it to
open, so eventually, if you want to use it, it's less hassle to pay.
I still have version 5.9.
When I need to clip things out of a file, I select a box, cut (or copy),
then choose "Create new picture from clipboard".
