The other option is to use snapshot as each institutional role
assignment has a DSK so you can swap them that way. We remove and
reassign all centrally controlled primary and secondary roles each
night. The instructions are in the Bb manuals and there's been plenty of
postings about this topic in the past - have a browse through the
archives of this list and/or the BbADMIN-L list hosted by ASU :-)

Hi Tyne,
The Blackboard GUI doesn't offer such a functionality. You can indeed
assign a primary institution role when batch creating accounts, but
there's no batch functionality to change it.
In my institution students are split up in 5 different institution
roles, depending on the department where the have their education.
Sometimes they also shift from one department to another.
Based on the information from the SIS I run a query on the database to
select all student accounts for a specific department in the users table
of the (bb60) database. That query also shows their primary institution
role from the same table. With a search-replace statement I change the
initial primariry institution role into the desired one (you need to use
the institution role PK1's for that).
Simply by running 5 queries I can add all students to the proper
institution role.
It's relatively ease to accomplish but ofcourse you need access to the
database.
Hope this helps.
Met vriendelijke groet,

Hi Tyne,
There is an option in the Batch Add users to include Primary
Institutional Role as part of the upload. This should do the job for
you.

Subject: Batch changing Institutional roles
Hello everyone,
My question is about the setting and changing of Institutional roles.
As a bit of background, we are currently running Blackboard 8 SP3 and
for the most part have only ever created students with the same
Institutional role, so the tabs, modules and branding (let's call them
the frontend) the students see have always remained the same no matter
what course they are enrolled on.
We are now developing a new programme in which a student needs to
complete a number of courses in order to gain the qualification and what
we would like to do is give students a different frontend depending on
which course they are currently taking part in. We think that the way to
do this is to change the student's Institutional role, and therefore
associated frontend, each time they start a new course. This is fine if
the number of students is small, as it can be done manually, but the
number we are expecting would not make this practical.
So my question is, is there some way in which we can batch change
student Institutional roles?
Look forward to your responses and thank you,
Regards
Tyne Koppen
