Hello
In advance of moving to our new office early next year, we (the Glamorgan
Record Office) are in the process of packaging and barcoding our collection.
Every package, be it a box, volume or rolled plan, has been given a unique
identifier in the form of a barcode, which is then linked to the item reference/s
and location within an Access database. Although this database is proving an
invaluable operational tool in terms of production (we don't have a CALM
location database yet), barcoding was really only intended to be a means of
tracking items during the decant to the new building. However, considering
that every item will have a linked barcode by the time we move, it seems
logical to consider whether we could use these to facilitate production in some
way.
So, I would be very interested to hear from any repositories who are actively
using barcodes in their production system. How does your system operate?
How do you use the barcodes practically? Does your system utilise or interface
with the CALM Issues module, or does it stand alone? Alternatively, have you
found using barcodes unsuccessful? Any information would be very gratefully
received.
There are a few other issues I'm likely to be looking for help with over the next
12 months as our move comes ever closer, and I apologise in advance if my
name becomes one of those that produces a groan when it pops up in your
Inbox...
Best wishes
Geoff
