Applications are invited for the new post of Head of Special
Collections and Principal Keeper in the John Rylands University
Library, The University of Manchester.
If appointed to this eminent position in one of the great rare book
and manuscript libraries of the world, you will be expected to lead
the strategic development of the Special Collections and to promote
access to them, whilst also ensuring their availability to future
generations.
In particular, you will create, adapt and implement policies relating
to acquisitions, digitisation, fundraising and other aspects of a
modern Special Collections operation. You will also be responsible
for acquiring material for the Collections and for leading the pursuit
of external funding to supplement the University's investment in the
Library. Access to the collections will need to be promoted and you
should be aware of the latest technological developments available to
facilitate use of the Collections by researchers and students.
As well as a good honours degree in an academic subject and a relevant
professional qualification, you will need to lead and motivate staff
and to influence and negotiate effectively. You should also have
management experience at a senior level in a library of a
research-intensive university or related institution.
Excellent communications and interpersonal skills as well as a
knowledge and awareness of the nature of academic research are also
pre-requisites.
