£53,650 p.a.
The KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Programme is a large, internationally
recognised, multi-disciplinary health research programme with two
centres in Kenya, based in Kilifi and Nairobi. Both sites actively
support scientific capacity building, and maintain collaborative
programmes with research centres and universities in Sub-Saharan
Africa, Europe, Australia, SE Asia and the USA. The programme
includes an expanding range of high-quality social science studies

systems and policies to preferentially benefit the poor, and
application of ethical principles in practice.
The programme is seeking to appoint a Senior Social Scientist with an
established research record to provide overall coordination and
management of social science capacity strengthening initiatives, and
to contribute to strategic development of the social sciences within
the KEMRI-Wellcome Programme. The overall aim will be to build on
current collaborations, achievements and capacity strengthening
initiatives to develop a centre of excellence in the social sciences
for the region. Based in Kenya, you will also be a member of the
Centre for Tropical Medicine and the Department of Public Health at
the University of Oxford.
You will have a PhD and established record in health-related social
science research in a relevant field such as anthropology, sociology,
psychology, economics, history, political science, or human
geography. You will have significant expertise in strategic
scientific planning and management, and capacity strengthening in
health-related social science research. Experience of working in East
Africa would be highly desirable. You will be skilled in providing
training for junior and mid-level social scientists.
The post is available for two years in the first instance.
