dear all - you may be interested in the latest Save Kids TV Newsletter which summarises recent reports from Ofcom, Digital Britain, the Westminster Forum and the BBC Trust, mainly from the point of view of children's content. The newsletter is forwarded as an email attachment - if it does not get through, can someone inform me and I'll cut and paste it into a message.
Last week I attended an event at the BBC hosted by members of the BBC Trust to discuss the Trust's own recent report on children's provision; this report prompted a number of news items in the press on the declining audience for Blue Peter and other BBC children's shows, apparently 'caused' by changes in scheduling. See for example http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009/feb/11/bbc-childrens-tv
The Trust are calling on the Executive to address the issues raised in the report (also available online - see the link in the SKTV newsletter.) There are a number of concerns within the BBC about the future of its children's provision, not least because of the proposed move of the department to Salford within the next two years.
The Meccsa exec meets on Thursday 19th Feb. I will raise the possibility of organising a Policy event. A number of ideas have been put forward, including having two small events - one in Glasgow, another in London. These would take the form of conversational symposia, with participants each giving brief presentations about a particular issue to generate discussion, rather than having keynote speakers etc. Costings need to be worked out, and advice will be taken from the Exec on this.
Can members let me know of any further thoughts/suggestions on Policy events, - or of any other matters to be raised at the Executive. The head of research at AHRC, Shearer West, is going to be at this meeting.
best wishes
Máire
