Call for papers - PhD student contributors:
CONCEPTUALIZING THE LEARNING REGION: ECONOMIC-GEOGRAPHICAL ASPECTS
Friday 17th April 2009
Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands
As part of the RSA Research Network "Theorising Regional Development:
the theoretical background of new concepts in regional studies", the
aim of this seminar is to further the conceptual development of the
learning region, in particular its economic-geographical aspects. The
session also builds on a series of events on learning regions
organised by Frans Boekema and Roel Rutten in the recent past.
Key questions addressed in this seminar are:
What are the basic characteristics of learning regions? How have ideas
about the nature of learning regions changed over time and what
further changes and developments can we foresee?
How can we move beyond the case study approach of examining learning
regions? What research methodologies are appropriate to undertake more
systematic research on larger numbers of regions?
What insights can be derived from recent work on spatial proximity and
innovation networks, social capital and the 'buzz and pipeline'
perspective, on the characteristics and significance of learning
regions?
To what extent does a learning region perspective differ from regional
innovation concepts in providing a basis for policy making? Is there
scope for working towards a comprehensive and integral approach of
regional economic development?
Papers will be presented by Fabiënne Corvers (European Commission, DG
Research), Holger Schiele (Jacobs University Bremen), Robert Hassink
(Christian Albrechts University Kiel), and Frank van Oort (Utrecht
University) & Arnoud Lagendijk (Radboud University Nijmegen).
In addition to the senior speakers, we are looking for PhD student
contributors. You will present a paper on your own work on learning
regions. One of the senior scholars will act as a discussant for your
paper. Moreover, you will act as a discussant for one of the seniors'
presentations yourself. If you are interested in presenting at this
seminar, please send an e-mail to: [log in to unmask] There is
