Subject: OII News [2009.02.05]: SDP, Recruitment, Working Papers and Events
Dear friends and colleagues,
New scholarship funding is now available for the 2009 Summer Doctoral Programme 'Creativity, Innovation and the Internet' to be held in Brisbane with the Creative Industries Faculty (QUT) in July. The funding will cover one full or two half scholarships (fees only) and will be available to support students who would not otherwise be able to attend.
We're also delighted to announce that programme tutors will include Nancy Baym, Stuart Cunningham, Jack Linchuan Qiu, Brian Fitzgerald and Axel Bruns. Together with other participating tutors, these faculty members will lead a programme that will cover topics such as the growth and implications of user-generated content, citizen media and community journalism, and regulatory barriers to innovation online. The full list of tutors includes faculty from the OII and the Berkman Center, who have taught on the Programme since its establishment in 2003, and is still being updated.
The application process closes on Monday 16 February 2009:

4. Humanities on the Web: Is it working?
--------------------------------------------------
OII Workshop: Thursday 19 March 2009 10:00 - 16:00
http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/events/details.cfm?id=238
The web now contains the results of many initiatives to digitize resources for the humanities but how successful are these initiatives and how much information has now been archived online?
This workshop discusses these issues, centred on two recent JISC Digitisation Programme-funded projects: Measuring impacts of digitized collections online ('Digitized Resources: A Usage and Impact Study'), and extracting materials from the Internet Archive and making the resulting dataset accessible for analyses ('World Wide Web of Humanities').
This one day event will present the results of both projects in the context of general panel discussions about the role of digitization in the practices of humanities researchers now and in the future.

6. Student Diary: Modes of Governance Workshop
--------------------------------------------------
Malte Ziewitz writes:
On 26 March 2009, we will host an interdisciplinary workshop on 'Modes of Governance in Digitally Networked Environments'. The basic idea is as follows: Digitally networked environments are often assumed to magically govern themselves. Especially when traditional modes of governance like law and centralized regulations fail, researchers tend to resort to rather vague ideas like 'self-regulation', 'decentralization', or 'peer production' to describe the complex interactions and mechanisms that take place in large-scale, loose-knit socio-technical networks.
In this workshop, we will adopt a different approach and take a closer look at new and non-obvious modes of governance in digitally networked environments. Specifically, we would like to explore what these modes are, how they work, and who or what controls them.
The theme is exploratory, the format informal, the target group PhD students and Post-Docs. If you are interested, have a look at the call:
http://users.ox.ac.uk/~kebl2964/netgov-workshop-cfp.pdf
The deadline for submissions is 20 February 2009.
This workshop is supported by the EPSRC 'Networks for Web Science' grant (EP/F0/3701/1).
