Motherhood/Personhood: Discovering an Anthropology of Motherhood at the End/s of Feminist Anthropology
Where are the mothers in feminist anthropology? Reproductive anthropology explores woman-as-mother but only in relation to her fetus and the anthropology of gender often normalizes or excludes motherhood in a conscious and historically valid attempt to focus on women’s non-reproductive bodies. Mothers get lost in the gap between these two fruitful feminist fields. And yet, the ethnographies that focus on mothers—their subjective lives, emotional experiences, moral dilemmas, or daily practices—show us that motherhood is more than a singular identity or narrowly defined set of practices, but is a pervasive, holistic and enculturated social role that shapes the identity, perspective, beliefs and behaviors of many women worldwide. This panel will bring together recent scholarship from all fields of anthropology that focus on mothers, motherhood, and mothering to illustrate the ways in which motherhood, broadly conceived, is a window into
women’s personhood, not just her reproductive capacity. This kind of scholarship on motherhood is a new direction for feminist anthropology in the 21st century.
