Dear readers,
Here is a message from abroad about a very similar project...
We are currently involved in a project with the name "Hebbes", which
means "Gotcha".
This project is a cooperation between the Museum of Gouda, Personal
Space Technologies and Adlib Information Systems and is funded by a
research grant from the Dutch Government.
Museum objects are 3D scanned, the data will be linked with the Adlib
Museum Collection Management System and me made accessible in a variety
of ways:
1. In the museum using a Personal Space Station.
This is display system in which the 3D scans are stereoscopically
displayed using a display system with a mirror. Under the mirror a
polygonic device is tracked that kan be held by the user. This way the
user can "haptically" manipulate the 3D virtual object. The display will
combine the virtual object with metadata from the Collection Management
System. The user can turn around the object and use virtual magnifying
glassed to study the object. The PSS is described on
http://www.personalspacetechnologies.com/product/pss/
2. In the museum using a video projection, this will be a large size
projection using a data projector. As in 1. A user can manipulate the
object using a haptic device.
3. On the web using a 3D-viewer (VRML or X3D), this is currently under
development
4. In the collection Management System using a plugin for the Adlib
Media Viewer.

There is a linked in group for the project too:

The project leader for the project is Patricia Olsthoorn from the Gouda
museum ([log in to unmask])
I hope you will find this information relevant (and no, they will not be
digitizing cheese;-)
Kindest regards,
