Sorry - when you said that learning a particular citation system was
"one of the least useful skills that [you] have never learnt", I must
have assumed that you meant that learning how to cite correctly was less
important than learning how to use Word 2007! Anything which ultimately
encourages good citation (as part of learning about writing skills) can
only be a good thing, IMHO.

Using a referencing tool does not necessarily equate with not learning
to
cite correctly. That's like saying using a knife and fork prevents you
from
knowing how to eat properly.
From my experience on my MA I was not good at creating correct citations
before I got the software tool - but using the tool I very quickly
picked up
what was right and wrong (and now I increasingly don't use the tool
anymore).

At the risk of doing a little stabbing, I think it would be dangerous to
discourage students from learning how to cite correctly whilst
encouraging them to rely wholly on a tool (built into Word or
otherwise). Aside from the problem which arises when the student doesn't
have access to the right version of Word (which presumably results in
them simply not bothering to cite their sources at all), it perpetuates
the myth that plagiarism is OK in this day and age (after all, if you
don't cite your sources, you are passing off everything you've written
as your own original work). It may be considered unnecessary when
studying (not a view I share) but it becomes vitally important for
research (both within academia and without).

Subject: Re: [VLES] Online tools for academic/writing skills
Although I haven't personally made the switch yet, one of the features
of
Word 2007 that I don't think exists in office 2003 is the bibliography
tool
- where as you are writing - if you want to refenece something, you can
add
a reference - this brings up a window, where you enter other information
(e.g. title of book, publisher, version etc...) then when you have
finished
you can create an automatic bibliography, which displays the
bibliographies
for the references used in whichever referencing system you are using.
Now this is a feature that I like, as there are many students (and
staff)
that find referencing systems confusing, and I am aware of students not
using a wide range of different sources, just to reduce the referencing
burden on themselves, and I would rather the learners spent more time
and
effort learning about their subject, and using a good range of sources
rather than learning how to properly create a Harvard (or similar)
reference, which is one of the least useful skills that I have never
learnt.
I can hear the pencils being sharpened ready to stab me, at making such
a
heretic remark!

Dear All
I was wondering if anybody had come across any online tool/tools that
students could use to support the development of their academic writing
or
writing skills.
If you do not want to reply to the list you can contact me directly.
