The first time I ever gave a paper at Kalamazoo, Kent and I were
yokefellows in a session with Judith Anderson as respondent. Judith,
as I recall, was witty and magisterial and not terribly impressed.
Kent took me to lunch afterward and helped rekindle my flickering
ego. Then, of course, when we got back for the afternoon sessions and
found ourselves teased a bit for dining together--since our papers had
been such polar opposites--he smiled sweetly and said, "I dined with a
loooong spoon."
I trust he has no need of one now . . .
