The 2009 Media Fellowships application process is now open online. It's a wonderful opportunity for scientists and engineers to see how science becomes news.
Some quotes from Fellows in 2008:
"During my Fellowship I gained a broad insight into the complexities, pressures and challenges of successfully reporting news stories."
"I then realised how exciting my placement was going to be - it was going to be me at the end of the phone asking the questions!"
"Working at the BBC was much like working in an academic institution, except the BBC heat their buildings!"
Please do pass the info below on to scientists/engineers with whom you work. If you could put flyers out at an event or would be willing to circulate a pdf to your contacts, please contact me off list or by phone 020 7019 4938.
Many thanks,
Nigel

Can you write about science accurately, clearly and engagingly?
Communicating the latest research developments to a broad audience is a special skill. Journalists sift through an avalanche of information, distilling out what’s news and turning it into readable copy. Spend 3-8 weeks with a media host on a summer placement, working with them to produce the news. Return to work understanding the media world, with more confidence about future forays into it. Develop your writing skills. Imagine producing funding applications and journal articles that are more concise, more readable and completed quicker!

Application deadline: 10 March 2009
Sponsored by BBSRC, EPRSC, ESRC, MRC, NERC, The Royal Academy of Engineering and The Royal Society.
