I have found that asking the employee to sign a verbal consent to disclosure - then either ringing the GP to chat about concerns or writing to the GP outlining a plan/concerns and inviting them to ring me, has worked on a number of occasions. Some Gp's refuse and say I must request a written report and pay - which isn't always helpful when time is an issue.
I did find Alan's input helpful as it is always good to see things from another perspective
