Dear All,
This subject is waking my curiosity - unfortunately! I haven't come across
this before or have completely forgotten about it. I will certainly be taking
more notice.
Re what I mentioned about birds and their transporting of seeds, does anyone
think this has any merit? My recollection of the positioning of such trees -
in this area anyway - is in many cases on the 'slump slope' (or inverted
cone), of collapsed shafts, and with adits, they tenaciously hold onto areas
close to rockhead, so these cannot have been planted. However, they could of
course be decedents? These places where the trees stand now would definitely
make good perches being so sheltered, but the planted ones - if same was done
here - would have gone down the shaft long ago. I tend to doubt deliberate
planting around here, not least because some of these shafts were 'only'
abandoned during the 1880's and 90's.
Regards, Bernard
