Can I suggest (I havn't spotted anyone else mentioning it, but forgive me if
they already did.)"The Canal Duke's Collieries, Worsley 1760-1900" by Glen
Atkinson which goes into great detail of the collieries and underground
canal at least. I bought a copy of this via the web last year, having lost
my original years ago. Also Alan Godfrey's reprints includes very large
scale (5ft to the mile) of the centre of Manchester in 1848-50 which show
(if I remember rightly) the location of the canals, branches, warehouses
etc.
Cheers everyone.
