Dear List
Regarding the planting of trees or shrubs on mineral lodes: I was told about 5
years ago by Bert Shorten, who stated that he was told by an old miner,
about 40 years previous the following: - Dartmoor’s miner’s planted hawthorn
trees on their high moorland tin lodes when the mine was wound-up, due to
their capacity in being able to survive in such wild and harsh conditions. Bert
also mentioned the old miner stated, that when the white flowers of the
blossom had dropped off they would indicate the width of the lode by how far
they had spread over the ground.
Now Bert or I never believed that, but, it is a good little story; but then again,
legends are made from something that resembles today’s stories.
Sorry Rick, I’ve not been too helpful in your quest for information regarding the
planting of trees etc on known mineral lodes.
Kindest regards Chris Kelland
