This does seem to be from someone who has picked up a name and a phrase and
stuck them together without enquiring any further. I looked out of the attic
window this morning and can confirm there are no signs of any strip mining
in the Penzance area. In fact Penzance is barely visible on the photo. The
white area near St Austell I would like to ascribe to china clay (not chalk)
but it could be cloud as it looks quite brigt. There are two white splodges
to the north-east (right in the photo) which could be clay works on Bodmin
Moor (Stannon and Whitborough/Park/Northwood) but the eastern one could also
be cloud. I suspect that the white over Devon is all cloud; I wonder if that
is what they think is strip mining. Does anyone have any contacts with NASA?
It would be nice to be able to put them straight when necessary.
