Dear Colleagues,
The first talk on the 2009 Philosophy and History of Medicine seminar series
at the University of Bristol will be given by Professor Harry Collins
(University of Cardiff, Centre For The Study Of Knowledge Expertise Science)
on Wednesday 21 January.
"Expertise and Dr. Golem"
Abstract:
At the Centre For The Study Of Knowledge Expertise Science at Cardiff we
have tried to introduce a Third Wave of Science Studies. Central to this
programme is the classification and analysis of expertise outlined in the
book `Rethinking Expertise.' The tacit knowledge-based classification will
be described along with a summary of Imitation Game experiments, including
some new ones on the blind, that investigate the new concept of
`Interactional Expertise.' It will be argued that the Imitation Game has
unique potential as a research tool for measuring cultural change. It will
also be argued that the boundary between specialist tacit knowledge-based
expertises and the expertises required by ordinary people to live in society
have an important bearing on the relationship between doctors and patients
-- a relationship first explored in the book `Dr Golem: How to
think about medicine.'
The talk begins at 5pm.
