About a million years ago, I commissioned Ninja Tune
(http://www.ninjatune.net )with Cold Cut (remember Yazz and the Only Way
is Up...) to produce a video and sound mixing interactive installation
called Generator that was installed in the basement of the Gallery of
Modern Art in Glasgow when it opened in 1996 until it was refurbished as
a library a few years later. Although it used what would be considered
fairly antique technology today it worked well and had a really nice
interface - very industrial with big chunky buttons - allowing live
mixing of I think 4 channels of audio and 2 channels of video. It was
really solid and stood up to a proper hammering as well as being very
funky (when we were testing it, at about 4amon the night before GoMA
opened, people were wandering in off the streets on their way home from
because they thought we had opened a new nightclub)
The guys who did it were Rob Pepperell (http://www.robertpepperell.com/)
and Matt Black (http://www.myspace.com/coldcut) - they did a lot of
pioneering stuff with music software and also game formats - they may be
worth looking up

Subject: On-gallery music composition/mixing
Dear List,
We're looking to develop a composing/mixing interactive to help
interpret both a collection of instrument we will be displaying and an
audio archive we have in our collection. Can anybody point me towards
any examples of music composition or mixing software used in a museum's
context either on-gallery or on-line?
Thanks,
Lyndsey
