Not sure I understand your point? There are plenty of reality based
examples if you want them. How about global fisheries? A fairly real
example of a commons type situation where individuals profit in the
short term to their long term cost (and a wider cost to others).
There are examples in libraries. I wrote one up related to the system
we use for interlending in London Health Libraries a few years back (it
seems to have dropped off the web). In essence we build a commons
through our contributions to a shared resource catalogue. If some
libraries do not update their holdings regularly those who do are placed
under additional strain. This encourages people to defer updating and
the commons is devalued as fewer current items are presented as
available.
