Prue Goodwin lectures on literacy and children’s books at the University of Reading and is the editor of the recently published Understanding Children’s Books and also of The Literate Classroom, Texts for Teaching Literacy and Literacy Through Creativity. She spent many years as a classroom teacher, before becoming an advisory teacher and then Director of Inset at the Reading and Language Information Centre at University of Reading. She is active as a conference speaker, as a provider of training on language and literacy development and in researching literacy development in schools
The Teachers as Readers project has already provided insight into the children’s fiction used by primary school teachers and how they choose and find out about children’s literature. The research raises issues of relevance to librarians working in education and in children’s services which deserve serious consideration.
The project is now in phase two. Prue will talk about
o What the project reveals about teachers’ knowledge of children’s literature
o How teachers are using children’s literature in the classroom
o Which sources of information are used by teachers to find out about children’s literature
o How far librarians influence teachers’ knowledge and choices of children’s literature
o How teachers’ reading of children’s literature is addressed in initial teacher education
o How the project is continuing
o How librarians can get involved
