The mysqldump manpage suggests that for storage backends that support
transactions (i.e. InnoDB) using the '--single-transaction' option will
allow mysqldump to run without locking the tables to other users at
all, since it uses the transaction support to get a consistent snapshot
rather than the default '--lock-tables' approach.
I haven't tried this, but what happens if you run your existing
mysqldump
based scripts with --single-transaction added?
